Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Scott Gabrielson, Founder of Oliver Cabell, a high end footwear brand without the markups. Scott attended the University of Minnesota for his undergrad and the University of Oxford for his MBA.
Scott has always been fascinated with luxury clothing and accessories, but the price tag would deter him away. After working in hedge funds, Scott launched Oliver Cabell, starting with accessories and slowly moved towards Italian leather, casual footwear.

The North Face: Hap Klopp

Friday Jan 29, 2021
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Hap Klopp, Founder and ex-CEO of The North Face, one of the world's leading outdoor apparel brands. Growing up in Washington, Hap was drawn to the outdoors and exploration. His family had a company in which Hap later took over and sold following his years at Stanford University.
Following Stanford, Hap realized he didn't fit in corporate business, after numerous interviews requiring dress code and for his real name, "Kenneth" to be used, rather than Hap. He then went on to use the money left from the family business, to purchase a number of existing outdoor product stores, on the west coast. These stores began to expand as they transitioned to become The North Face, and manufactured their own products. From the start, Hap's vision with The North Face was to replace existing clothing with better insulated and lightweight material, that would ultimately allow for further exploration.
Make sure to check out Hap's book, Conquering the North Face: An Adventure in Leadership at: https://www.amazon.com/Conquering-North-Face-Adventure-Leadership/dp/1475965648/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Hap+Klopp&qid=1611864243&sr=8-1

Friday Jan 22, 2021
Friday Jan 22, 2021
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Ajay Kori, Founder of Allay Lamp, a therapy lamp for migraine sufferers, using a patented narrow band of green light, discovered by Harvard neuroscientist, Dr. Rami Burstein.
Ajay attended Duke University for his undergrad for a major in Applied Science, and attended Harvard University for his MBA. Following college, Ajay has founded numerous startups such as UrbanStems, an online flower delivery service, Novilla Pharmaceuticals, and Allay Lamp.
While collaborating with Dr. Rami Burstein, they wanted to find the correct light band that could limit stress on the eyes, that result to migraines. This type of bulb was first estimated to $20,000, until they found a contact who worked with light installation for NASA on the space station, who was able to introduce a precious band at an affordable price. From this, the Allay Lamp was born and has been effective nation wide.

Friday Jan 15, 2021
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Kevin Wohlman, Founder of Southern Scholar, superior dress socks crafted for comfort, fit, and durability. Kevin attended Arizona State University, where he studied both accounting and entrepreneurship.
Following college, Kevin worked in the tax world, where he was introduced to the issue of typical dress socks not holding up and sliding down the leg as the day progressed. He realized the void in a comfortable and durable dress sock, which inspired him to start Southern Scholar. In 2014, Kevin launched Southern Scholar with a vision to provide the best dress socks on the market, built to last.
Selling through DTC, Southern Scholar has diversified their product offerings and can even be purchased in the form of a subscription.

Rumpl: Wylie Robinson

Friday Jan 08, 2021
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode, I am joined by Wylie Robinson, Founder of Rumpl, a blanket made for everywhere. Wylie attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where he studied Environmental design and was apart of the cycling team.
While on a surfing trip, Wylie and his Co-Founder's vehicle was unresponsive to start. While camping out, they realized the void in versatility with "indoor" blankets, and how their sleeping bags could withhold the outdoor climate. Taking this into account, Wylie returned home and sewed up their first prototype, which evolved to become Rumpl as it is today. In late 2020, Wylie presented Rumpl to ABC's Shark Tank, where he went on with already raising $3 million plus in funding prior. Listen as we talk about Wylie's upbringing, the development of Rumpl, and the complete Shark Tank experience.

Lovesac: Shawn Nelson

Friday Dec 18, 2020
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode I am joined by Shawn Nelson, Founder of Lovesac, a diverse furniture company, with their parent product... the Sac; a beanbag-like sac, filled with a proprietary blend of recycled foam remnants called Durafoam.
Growing up in Utah, Shawn was nurtured with a driven mindset, where he diversified in many areas. Shawn attended the University of Utah where he studied both music and Chinese. At 18 years old, Shawn conceptualized the idea of creating a giant sac that served a greater offering than the current average bean bag. After experimenting with a plethora of materials and fillings, Shawn's first prototype grew as a major enjoyment within his friends and beyond. Shawn has reached extensive success with his journey with Lovesac, along with winning $1,000,000 in Richard Branson's 2004 Rebel Billionaire. What started out as an experiment, later turned into Lovesac, a furniture company with over 70 locations, publicly listed on NASDAQ, and features an array of products from the initial Sac to a full Sactional (sectional couch).

The Tie Bar: Greg Shugar
Friday Dec 11, 2020
Friday Dec 11, 2020
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode I am joined by Greg Shugar, Founder of The Tie Bar, an affordable mens tie company. Working in law, Greg realized the void in affordable ties. This opened up an opportunity for Greg and his wife to start the first mens care brand through DTC that differed from other brands...a uniform price strategy. Each tie was $15 across the board, which allowed for customers to focus more on the design and fit, rather than price diverting them.
Starting The Tie Bar out of their basement, Greg and his wife eventually grew it to over $19 million in annual revenue. Greg eventually sold the business to a private equity group in 2013. In 2019, Greg acquired Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont, where he now operates full time as CEO.

Brrrn: Jimmy Martin
Friday Dec 04, 2020
Friday Dec 04, 2020
Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. In this episode I am joined by Jimmy Martin, Co-Founder of Brrrn, a cool temp fitness studio in NYC. While pursuing his passion in comedy, Jimmy fulfilled his extra time with personal training. Through conversation, it became clear that excessive seemed to become more effective when in the winter months, due to the unawareness of sweat or fatigue.
Jimmy took this theory to the test with his Co-Founder, Johnny, when they performed a training session in a 38° beer fridge, in Brooklyn. This test inspired the development of Brrrn as it is today. Along with their studio in NYC, they developed a slide board which can be used in both classes and in-home. The Brrrn Board can be purchased on their website, which combines nicely with their at home workout program.
